How many images can I enter?
There are five different categories for entry to the competition HOME, WORK, PLAY, BEAUTY and FAME. You can be as creative as you want in interpreting these. Each person is allowed to enter a maximum of three different images across three different categories from the list of five. What this basically means is that you can't enter the same image twice.

Who is the competition open to?
The competition is open to anyone of any age who is a resident of the UK, Northern Ireland, Channel Islands or Isle of Man. If you are under 16 you will need to get a parent or guardian to read the terms and conditions and to give their signature to class as permission to enter.

What am I allowed to enter?
You can enter printed images (by post) or digital images (via this website) as long you are the sole author and owner of the copyright in all of the pictures entered i.e. you must have been the one to take the photo in the first place! You are allowed to enter images that have been digitally manipulated, or an image that derives from more than one negative - provided (as above) that you own copyright to all the negatives used.

Is there a limit to the size of the image I can enter?
Yes. Printed image submissions can be no smaller than a passport-sized photo and no bigger than standard A3. Digital images must be JPEG or BMP images with a 1MB maximum file size.

Is there any sort of image I can't enter?
You should avoid including any works such as paintings, sculptures, posters etc too prominently unless you have the artist's permission in writing. The same goes for getting written permission from anyone featured in a potentially embarrassing situation. If you are taking a picture featuring someone prominently you should always ask his or her permission first. Entries considered by the promoter to be obscene or in any other way unacceptable in terms of taste and decency will be disqualified.

When is the closing date for submission?
The closing date for submissions is 5.00pm, FRIDAY, 30 MARCH 2001; it is the same for both postal and digital entries. Please remember that this is the date that entries must be received by, so allow time for the Royal Mail to deliver if sending by post. The organisers will not be responsible for entries lost or delayed in the post.

Will I still have copyright over my images?
Yes, you will retain ownership and copyright of your images but Channel 4 reserves the right to display, reproduce and publish your images for promotion and publicity of the YR.1 project. In addition Channel 4 reserves the world-wide right to reproduce entries in any book associated with the competition. The license for this will be exclusive for one year from 30 March i.e. you would only be able to have your photo published in another book after this time.

Can I submit my photos both online and on paper?
Yes, you can - but the rules above still apply - you can only enter three images in total across three different categories. Entries will be cross-referenced when they are received. Please do not send the same image or images by both online and postal routes.

If I can't write my name on the back of my images how will you be able to identify me?
The images are given unique reference numbers when we receive them so that the competition is totally anonymous and as fair as we can make it. For this reason it is very important that you do not write anything on the photographs other than the information requested (category and entry number).

What is the online gallery?
The Channel 4 website will have a special gallery section where some entries to the YR.1 competition will be displayed. You can opt to have your entry posted in the online gallery by checking the appropriate box on the entry form.

I can't find my photo on the online gallery - where is it?
If your image is accepted into the gallery, you will be sent an email. If you opted to have your photo displayed on the online gallery and you can't find it, it is probably because, due to predicted volume of entries, there will be a limit on the number that can be posted on the website. Please note that Channel 4 also reserves the editorial right to decide which images will enter the gallery.

What happens after I have sent off my entry?
After entries are received a shortlist will be drawn up by a panel of independent judges to go on to the next round of the competition. If you are on the shortlist you will be contacted by post prior to the announcement of the winner in July.

Will I get my photos back?
No - unfortunately the volume of entries means that this will not be possible.

When will the winners be announced?
The award ceremony is scheduled to be broadcast live on Sunday, 1 July 2001. Please note transmission dates are subject to change.

Will I be in the exhibition?
If you are appearing in the exhibition, you will be informed in writing by Channel 4.

What happens if my question is not on this list?
There is a local rate enquiries number, 0845 111 0003, which you can call us on between 9.30am-5.00pm, Mondays to Fridays until Friday, 6 April 2001. Please note that we can not confirm receipt of entry.

Please make sure you have read the terms and conditions.

If you have supplied us with an email address we can mail you updates on the YR.1 competition as it progresses - remember to check the box asking for these where requested on the entry form.

GOOD LUCK!
