Vincent - The Full Story

Starting in childhood, Vincent van Gogh made a painting of the view from his bedroom window wherever he lived or stayed. However mundane or bleak, he found value in even the smallest detail of his surroundings.

In our competition, the opportunity was open to all to paint their own 'Window on the world', whether the high street, freight depot or rolling countryside, with prizes for the best.

By the deadline of 6 June 2004 a whole host of paintings had been received and hung in our online gallery. Winners were then chosen by an online poll, the number of votes deciding first, second, third and consolation prizes.

By the closing date of 13 June 2004 all the votes had been cast and counted. There was a great response.

Top score went to Mark P Morgan who receives the first prize package. In second place was Georgie Cashman and in third place Rachel Palmer.

Consolation prizes were then awarded to Abdul Magid, Sarah Walford, John Soonaye, Gill Dyer, Catherine Fenwick and Tilly Willis.

All the winners have been notified by email.

The Prize

First prize was:

• One year's standard membership of the SAA – the Society for All Artists – for beginners and professionals alike. Membership includes a bi-monthly newsletter, offers on a complete range of instruction, including live artists, books and videos plus discounts on materials, paints, brushes and surfaces.
• A stylish painting set, containing a table easel, oils and brushes.
A copy of Van Gogh: The complete paintings by Ingo F Walther and Rainer Metzger, published by Taschen. An indispensable catalogue of van Gogh's work, ideal both for research and for general reading, giving information on type of paint, size of canvas and details of where the paintings can be found.
• A copy of The Complete Letters of Vincent van Gogh, published by Penguin. The letters cover the period 1872-1890, from van Gogh's time as an employee of the art gallery of Goupil in The Hague to his final tragic months in Auvers-sur-Oise.
• A video from the Tom Keating series on Impressionists. It illustrates how van Gogh as well as other painting greats created their masterpieces.

Second and third prizes:

• A copy of Van Gogh: The complete paintings.
• A copy of Lust for Life – the classic fictional biography of Vincent van Gogh by Irving Stone, published by Arrow. The painter is brought to life not only as an artist but as a personality and this account of his violent, vivid and tormented life is a novel of rare compassion and vitality.
• A copy of The Complete Letters of Vincent van Gogh.

Copies of Lust for Life and The Complete Letters were also awarded as consolation prizes.
