Turner Prize 2003
People's Poll: 20 Years of the Turner Prize

20 years. 74 artists. 19 winners. One favourite.

For the first time in Turner Prize history the public got the vote. To mark two decades of prize-winning contemporary British art, Channel 4, the Tate and the Guardian polled the people.

Did you vote for Anish Kapoor for the serene beauty of his work, Damien Hirst for his Britart iconic status, Lucian Freud, grand-master of the naked body, or bad girl Tracey Emin for her bare-all style? Did you prefer Peter Doig's surreal landscapes, Grayson Perry's provocative pots, or Cornelia Parker's exploded debris? There's an artist for all tastes. 74 contenders but only one favourite. More about the artists.

After a close-fought battle, Anish Kapoor emerged as the winner.

The top ten people's favourite artists were, in order:

  1. Anish Kapoor
  2. Grayson Perry
  3. Antony Gormley
  4. Douglas Gordon
  5. Jake and Dinos Chapman
  6. Lucian Freud
  7. Tracey Emin
  8. Rachel Whiteread
  9. Cornelia Parker
  10. Anya Gallaccio
