The Turner Prize was founded by Tate's Patrons of New Art. They wanted a name associated with great British art. They chose JMW Turner (1775-1851) partly because he had wanted to establish a prize for young artists. It also seemed appropriate to choose the name of an artist whose work was controversial in his own day.
The prize is awarded to a British artist under fifty
for an outstanding exhibition or other presentation in the twelve months
before 9 May 2006. This year's prize fund is £40,000 with £25,000 going to the winner and £5,000 each for the other shortlisted artists.
The winner will be decided by a jury whose members are:
Lynn Barber, writer, The Observer;
Margot Heller, Director, South London Gallery;
Matthew Higgs, Director and Chief Curator, White Columns, New York;
Andrew Renton, writer and Director of Curating, Goldsmiths College;
Nicholas Serota, Director, Tate and Chairman of the Jury.

The Turner Prize Challenge
The Turner Prize was established in 1984 to promote discussion about contemporary art. In keeping with this founding principle and as part of this year's Turner Prize coverage a new TV programme has been developed by Channel 4 and Tate called The Turner Prize Challenge. The programme, based around finding fresh voices to present contemporary art, will be broadcast on Saturday 2 December on Channel 4.
To be part of the programme visitors to the Turner Prize, between 14 and 29 October, were invited to make a short comment about the exhibition, on film, in the Turner Prize Video Booth installed besides the exhibition. The challenge? To champion the work of one shortlisted artist who is not their first choice and pick out what it takes to win the Turner Prize. These screentests were then be judged by Tate and Channel 4 and four shortlisted candidates chosen. The four candidates will each present the work of one of the four Turner Prize artists as part of the half hour programme. The winner will be decided by our judges:
Jon Snow: C4 News Presenter
Trevor Nelson: DJ
Louisa Buck: Art Critic
who will assess the performances of the four hopeful art critics before deciding a winner as part of the programme.
The winner will be invited to the Turner Prize awards ceremony at Tate Britain on Monday 4 December and given the opportunity to make a news feature on the announcement to be shown on www.channel4.com.
