| Every year the Turner Prize and Channel 4 bring off the remarkable feat of
making contemporary art the hot topic. At newsdesks and around the land,
people suspend conversations about celebrities, football and house prices
to discuss the merits of the nominated artists — or just to splutter about
how art isn't what it used to be. Fortunately, art not being what it used to be is the whole point of the
Turner, which is awarded annually to a British artist under the age of 50.
Freshness and originality are key — and although the four artists nominated
this year differ widely in their subject–matter and approach, each has
these qualities in spades. Each is also interested in aspects of society and
social relations — from intimate personal stories and folk–culture to
architecture, global politics, history and race.
