Anatomist Professor Gunther Von Hagens will be conducting
the first public autopsy to be carried out in Britain since
the 1830s in front of a live audience today. On Tuesday night
Channel 4 screened the autopsy and hosted a studio discussion
with Von Hagens, plus experts and commentators from both sides
of the debate that his work has provoked.
The following are a representative selection of the comments
received by THINKTV. We received hundreds of comments, and
although we would like to post them all on the site, we are
not able to, but thankyou to everyone for joining in the debate.
If you have a view on this programme let us know.
A lot of you have asked about a repeat showing - at the moment
it isn't shceduled, but if we get any more information we'll
post it here.

I want to voice my disgust at your Channels plan to televise
the Bodyworlds 'Autopsy'?! I believe to do so contravene a human
right of dignity after death - I have seen the Bodyworlds exhibition
and was a little disturbed by it, its popularity and the need
for public spectacle. But in showing an autopsy which flouts
the laws of our country I think has overstepped the mark and
is in very poor taste. I request that you think again about
giving this airtime!

Well done to Channel 4 to having the balls to show this programme.
I have become increasingly tired of the uninteresting bland
television, that seems to be aimed squarely at readers of the
Daily Mail, and yes I do mean Richard and Judy. Channel Four
used to be the home of groundbreaking television, some of it
excellent, some of it not so good, but all of it original. Now,
we are used to seeing the same rehashed concepts, but on the
day Celebrity Big Brother starts we also have The Autopsy. Many
people think that this is ghoulish rather than educational.
I however think that it IS exceptionally educational. Many of
us will have autopsies performed on us after we die and I for
one would like to know what takes place.

Well done Channel 4 for showing this. I truly don't understand
why this is upsetting people. Yes, I realise that Death is a
very upsetting thing and some people feel that this is some
form of desecration and I respect that, but these people need
to realise that not everyone feels this way. If you don't like
it, don't watch it. I am watching it right now and it has affected
me in a way that no other piece of TV has. It's surreal and
powerful. Channel 4, I congratulate you.

I looked forward to "the Autopsy" all evening. However,
what was the point of you airing it at all? As the only thing
i saw were the faces of the audience. You warned people before
and during the programme, of the graphical content. I was aware
of this and this is why I was watching, for the graphical content.
What an utter waste of time. I am very disappointed.

I have just been forced to turn my television off, and come
online to voice my disgust at the screening of a live public
autopsy. A late family member used to be an anatomy lecturer
earlier this century, and I know for a fact that there is no
way on this earth that he would have approved of the public
screening of an autopsy. To screen such a thing on terrestrial
television, regardless what time it is in, is just down right
sick.

Imedietly after the programme started I was rather disapointed
with the Camera work done while the Autopsy was taking place.
The programme spent more time looking into the audience and
at the backs of the people performing the Autopsy then they
did actualy showing us what was happening while the Profesor
was making his cuts. At one point he even asked for the camera
to come and see but we remained with the pictures of the profesors
back. Overall I was disapointed with the programme's covereage
of the Autopsy.

I have been looking forward to watching the autopsy
all day and I am very impressed by the educational aspect of
it. Unfortunately I have to complain about the camera work.
We did not get to see much of the autopsy and did get to see
a lot of shots of faces in the crowd. I have no need to see
their faces. That is just making the program sensational and
showman like. Ironically you tried to convice us this is not
what the program was about.

Commendable work Channel 4. Unpleasent truths about human mortality
and debate about the taboo of death - challenging television.
We need this type of intellectual stimulation; to brush it aside
with stale references to human rights and dignity is missing
the point (besides, what about the rights of the deceased to
his own post death fate??). For bringing information to the
masses, thank you Channel 4.

I have been drawn to watch this by curiosity, as I'm sure many
millions have, which I believe to be the reason for your screaning
of it. Don't get me wrong I admire it, Channel 4 is a business
and this is a brave bold move. However, I dont really think
it suitable for television. We choose what we watch but I feel
that I cannot choose and my curiosity is forcing me to watch.
This will distress many people and you will have many complaints.
My words are certainly not a complaint, quite simply an opinion.
