Hollyoaks
I'd like to talk about Hollyoaks. I love Hollyoaks but all the girls
look the same, all blonde, it's really hard to differentiate the characters,
and also the opening credits are very, very out of date. If you've
only just started watching it you won't know who any of the other
characters are. But what I've said about them all being blondes, if
they do need another actress, I'd like to do it

Response from the Mersey Television.
Why do the Hollyoaks credits still feature
old characters & why have they not been updated?
The Hollyoaks credits have now been updated and are using a snazzy
new theme tune - check it out. Mersey TV have been working with
Channel 4 to develop new credits to incorporate the latest characters,
including recent newcomer Ellie Hunter (played by Sarah Baxendale).
Why are there so many blondes in Hollyoaks?
You certainly don't have to be blonde to be in Hollyoaks. When
we're casting for new characters, we don't stipulate a particular
hair colour for actors to try out for parts, but it just so happens
that around 90% of people who turn up for castings are blonde. We
have a harder job trying to find non-blondes!

I am concerned at the message that Hollyoaks is giving
to teenage girls. The program is marketed at a certain age group who
are vulnerable and image conscious. Practically all the female actresses
on the program have the same colour hair, are the same height, have
similar complexions and have the same slim figure. This is not representative
of the majority of girls in 'the real world' and i feel it is adding
to the pressure put on girls by the media to conform to this look
to be acceptable by both themselves and by others. To add to this,
the only girls not of this 'beautiful blonde race' are struggling
desperately, Anna with the pressures of her situation and Chloe with
the fact that she does not look like her peers. The fact that she
is loved by her boyfriend is of no consolation as he seems to love
her DESPITE of her figure not because of who she is, including her
body. I dont know the intended storyline that will unfold for Chloe
but I do hope that it will not reinforce your promotion of the inadequacy
of young girls who dont look like your cast. I feel that with such
a popular program as Hollyoaks, producers should take more responsibility
for the underlying messages they are giving to their audiences.

I don't feel that your rather flippant reply went long
way to explaining why there are so many blonde female characters in
the show and undermines what are essentially great characters and
well written plot lines. To state that 90% of the people who turn
up to castings are blonde only implies to me that actors who turn
up to castings also believe that you only casting a particular type
for the soap. There was a national public casting competition a couple
of years ago to find people who maybe didn't conform to any physical
standard, but did want to act seemed to point to a move towards representing
your target audience more in the the show. It's a shame that ideal
doesn't seem to have been kept up. Characters such as Chloe Bruce
are part of a stong character led plot that is done very well on the
show, not majorly about "physical" storylines but also emotional
ones too very subtly done - proving that the cast which you do have
that don't conform to the "blonde" platform are outstanding,
underused and often overlooked.

I think that the programmes being shown at the moment about Laura
are totally unsuitable. I am going through that at the moment and
it seems like you are taking the mickey! I don't think it's right
that you are portraying cancer to be a joke and that you could even
write a script that makes it look like people should lie about having
cancer and its not a laughing matter. I think that a lot of people
if they are in the same situation as me would feel the same way
and that I think you have been very insensitive on the subject.
