What really annoys me about telly now is the fact that they put
all the series that were really good on digital and satellite channels
now, so if you want to watch your favourite sitcoms that were on
terrestrial telly last year now it's been moved to a new digital
channel so unless you've got Sky or cable or some other satellite
receiver and you pay out the extra money each month you can't watch
your favourite programmes, so it really annoys me.

Response from Channel 4
Channel 4 introduced Friends and ER to British
audiences and turned them into the valuable and popular programmes
that they are today. Once Channel 4 established these shows
Sky brought the first runs. First runs of US series such as Friends
and ER have been on pay TV (Sky One) since 1996. It makes
little sense for Channel 4 to buy US series, market them and schedule
them in peak times and then simply hand the benefit on to another
broadcaster. With E4 and Channel 4 sharing rights to these shows
it is the Channel 4 brand as a whole that gets the cross promotional
benefits.
West Wing on E4 does not mean you have to wait any
longer for the show to come on to Channel 4. The future of
television is changing - In less than 10 years time, more than 20
million UK homes will have digital television and so Channel
4 can’t afford to stay still. E4 will protect our relevance
in this changing world and continue to innovate and discover new
talent. E4 services a public demand for entertainment and
by generating new revenue it also support Channel 4’s broader
Public Service ambitions.

I have to agree with the comment made by Russell (05/02) - far
too many of the 'better' television programmes (sitcoms/ documentaries
etc) are shown on cable/digital/satellite. This just further contributes
to the marginalisation of groups in our society. To have a television
in the first place, you need to purchase a licence - but then to actually
view quality programmes, you need to fork out even more on cable/satellite
subscriptions. And it's not like you get advertisement free viewing
with
these channels either. One has to ask whether it is really value for
money. Sadly, considering the dismal state of terrestrial television,
it could well be.

I'm against pay per view on cable and Sky TV when we
pay a license fee and Sky subscription then a digi box. Just take
my full wages why don't you. Paying 3 times for TV. Not right.

I have to agree Ch4's comments, but also the responses to it. Broadcasting
companies are increasingly making us pay for something we used to
get for free - good telly. But so long as the best programmes end
up on terrestrial at their usual time, then its fine if some people
want to pay to boast that they've seen it first. We can only hope
that this is just a big transitional period until everyone has cable/digital/whatever,
and that we will once again only have to pay once. That's what should
happen, but I reckon they'll come up with some excuse for us to
pay even more in the future, like having to rent the space between
our eyes and the tv.

Although I hate to say this about Pauls comment (11/02)
I really do have to disagree. We pay a licence fee to fund the BBC
Services, not C4/E4 or any other programmes and remember that Sky
subs do start at about £10 a month and this is totally optional
(unlike the licence fee) and without the Sky Digibox how do you think
you are going to actually see the programme...but then you have to
buy a television to view "free" tv, and also you have to
buy a video to record programmes. I hate this as much as the next
person but you have to relaise that this don't come cheap and I doubt
the BBC, C4, BSkyB or anybody would happily give every house in the
country a new TV just so they can watch for nothing, and anyway thats
what the adverts are for they make ITV1, C4 & C5 "free"
