These 4 new radio dramas emerged from a shortlist of 8 scripts chosen by our adjudicators from 500 submissions to our online competition launched in Spring 2007 off the back of Channel 4’s Theatre talent search, The Play’s The Thing.
In April & May 2007, the four winning writers completed two intensive radio drama writing workshops at Channel 4. They worked with top radio drama experts including writers, Annie Caulfield, Mike Walker, Katie Hims and Mike Bartlett; producer / director John Dryden; sound designer & composer Nick Russell-Pavier and radio soap specialist, Penny Leicester.
They got to
- Develop their scripts
- Receive top industry mentoring
- Win studio time and drama expertise to produce their 15 minute plays
- Work with directors from TV & stage making their radio drama debuts
- Have their work streamed on Channel 4.com & eventually aired on 4Radio
The four plays have now been recorded under the executive production of Maud Hand and John Dryden, both experienced radio producers – Maud in developing new talent in broadcast media while John specializes in recording dramas on location, a kind of ‘movies for the wireless’.

If you’ve missed the competition, you can still be inspired to develop your radio drama-writing skills by downloading our set of guides from four working radio playwrights: Mike Bartlett; Charlotte Jones; Tim Wright and Neil Nixon.
In the TV production of The Play’s The Thing (2006) university lecturer Kate Betts’ work On The Third Day was produced for the West End stage by award-winning producer Sonia Friedman. Kate beat competition from 2000 entrants from around the UK.
