The investigation and subsequent siege of David Koresh and the Branch Davidians began when the sound of regular automatic gunfire from Mt Carmel attracted the attention of the local police force. They suspected Koresh was illegally converting semi-automatic guns into fully automatic machine guns capable of firing hundreds of rounds per minute – illegal in the USA under federal law. And why would a church need a massive gun collection and firing range anyway? So they decided to arrest Koresh – and all hell broke loose.
