Programme 1: Dispelling myths
The first episode of Shariah TV introduces the series, which
aims to dispel some of the myths that have grown up about Islam. Some of
these issues may be familiar to Muslims living in Britain but the programme
is also an introduction to the faith for non-Muslims.
The panel consists of Imam Muhammad Arshad Misbahi, Dr Mohammad Naseem, Dr Saeed Bahmanpour and Aisha Bewley.
Are headscarves obligatory?
The opening discussion is about one of the most visible signs that a woman is a Muslim – the wearing of the hijab or headscarf to protect her modesty. The scholars all agree that it is explained in the Qur’an that it is important for women to dress modestly.
Islam and terrorism
The programme moves on to one of the most explosive topics in the world today: does Islam condone acts of terrorism and violence?
The panel are keen to emphasise that Islam is a peaceful religion and would never encourage acts of terrorism. In response to a question from an audience member, who wants to know the circumstances in which it would it be legitimate for him to answer a call for a jihad or to go to war in defence of Islam, they discuss the meaning of jihad as a ‘struggle’. The panel all agree that it is not up to Muslims living in Britain to answer calls for jihad in other countries.
Laws in conflict
The scholars then answer questions on whether Muslims in Britain are expected to follow British law or Shariah law if they conflict with each other.
