Contemporary art can now be made from any sort of material and take virtually any form. It is not unusual to enter a gallery, once a hallowed space of white walls and serious paintings, and be confronted by works made from chocolate, blood, household rubbish or dust. Barriers between painting and sculpture, photography and film are blurred and there are no longer any rules determining what art is and what it must look like.

The only continuing theme and aspect that links contemporary works is the belief that the concept or idea within the work is as important as the aesthetic or physical content.
