/culture/The Real Blair Witch The Real Blair Witch

If you go down to the woods tonight…

Last year, a group of teenagers in Flint, Michigan filmed themselves as they kidnapped and terrorised a new acquaintance, before taking her out to the woods and dumping her in a shallow grave. They then taunted their terrified and blindfolded victim that she was about to be buried alive.

But was the kidnap real or just a sick game? Using the footage they shot that night, The Real Blair Witch attempts to uncover the truth.

The alleged victim, 19-year-old Danielle Taylor, claimed to have suffered a terrifying experience that put her in fear of her life. She reported the incident to the police, and the perpetrators were charged with kidnapping and conspiracy to commit felonious assault.

In court, the teenage defendants argued that they never had any intention of harming Danielle and were simply making a film, a real-life version of The Blair Witch Project. Furthermore, they claimed that Danielle was a willing accomplice who had agreed to take part in advance, and that her distress on camera was simply acting.

For her part, Danielle insisted that her terror was genuine and that she knew nothing of the plan in advance. In an attempt to find out the truth of the matter, the footage of that fateful night was shown in open court.

This programme talks to the people at the heart of this story - including two of the defendants - in an attempt to understand what really happened in the woods around Flint last year. It also screens the video of the 'abduction'. What is revealed is an extraordinary and disturbing record of a night when something went terribly, terribly wrong.
