Ethnicity Map of UK: Yorkshire and Humber

Nearly 92% of people living in the Yorkshire and The Humber area described themselves as White British – 5% more than the national average for England. Like in the neighbouring regions, Yorkshire's ethnic minority groups are concentrated in urban areas, and the cities of Leeds, Sheffield and Bradford are home to most of the region's Black and Asian people.

Yorkshire and the Humber has the fifth highest percentage of ethnic minority population after London, the West Midlands, the South East and the North West. It is also the fifth largest of England's nine regions and has a total population of 5.1 million.

The Asian group is the largest non-White group in Yorkshire, and there are over twice as many as in the next biggest group, White non-British. Leeds, Sheffield and Bradford are home to 65% of all the Asians in the region.

Yorkshire and the Humber Asian population is made up of more Pakistanis than Indians – there are only two other English regions where this happens. Nearly half of all the Pakistanis in the region live in Bradford, where they make up 14.5% of the general population – 10 times the national average.

There are not many Chinese people in this area – less than 1% – and the Black population is proportionally low in Yorkshire, too. The Black group – mainly centred in Sheffield and Leeds – is mainly made up of people of Caribbean origin rather than Black African.

Yorkshire and Humber in numbers
Out of every 1,000 people:

  • 916 are White British
  • 45 are Asian
  • 18 are White non-British
  • 9 are of mixed race
  • 7 are Black
  • 2 are Chinese

Focus on... Sheffield
Sheffield has the highest proportion of Black people of any of the other towns or cities in Yorkshire, although at just over 1% it is below the national average. The 9,000 in an overall population of 500,000 are just less than two thirds Caribbean.
