The way I work
I use a small camera and concentrate on getting inside people's heads and finding the universal humour in their situations. I think serious and intense themes can be swallowed effortlessly if there are laughs to be had. This premise has served me well through ten years of making films about difficult lives; arranged marriages, children in care, loneliness, first love, greed and loss – all these things allow moments of hilarity and recognition.
I think that is a great strength of the My New Home series. We can see what it is actually like to "come over here", and we can see ourselves, through the eyes of an outsider. And it's very funny
Brownies skipping round a toadstool for example, must appear deeply bizarre. And here we are, the British, thinking we're so normal just because we don't drink horse milk.
