4 October 1936

Sir Oswald Mosley, the leader of the British Union of Fascists declared that on 4 October 1936, his members would march through the heart of London's East End. His motive was to intimidate and harass the local Jewish community. The Jewish Chronicle advised readers to stay indoors and pull down the shutters. Jewish leaders warned that anyone involved in disorder would bring shame to their people. However, many people in the community decided that enough was enough. It was time to confront their tormentors.
