Fragment

Medlock Primary School, Manchester

The pupils of Medlock Primary School spent half a term studying the 'whispered histories' of three buildings of a similar age in Manchester: The Victoria Baths, Whitworth Art Gallery and their own school building.

At the Whitworth, the children were inspired by the work of Tom Philips and decided to take the theme of a stained glass window forward, discovering how fragments can combine to tell a story. At the baths, they worked with professional dancers and musicians, using the empty pool for movement work based on the idea of fragments.

The pupils translated their experiences into semi-abstract paintings, exploring the notion that we are all caught in the tides of constant transition. The works were shown both at the Whitworth Art Gallery and The Victorian Baths – and, of course, they have been entered into the Artworks: Young Artist of the Year Awards.
