Spray Can Art

Devonport High School for Boys

The reputation of Devonport High School for Boys quickly spread as they began work on their entry Spray Can Art.

Keen to tackle problems of graffiti tagging around the School, the boys proposed establishing an art club to provide a legal space to explore the techniques, history and ethics of the art form.

With the help of teacher Soraya Phillips and artists Barry Briggs and Roy Christie, the students applied for funding and worked with spray paint to produce large canvases that were displayed in their school.

As a result of this effort, the participants were asked to produce work for a junior tennis club, to spray-paint a stock car for a local company and to create a mural for a local play area.

Not bad going for an art form that is often dismissed as vandalism.
