Hybrid

Nottingham High School for Girls

It is the first time Nottingham High School for Girls has entered the Artworks Awards and their entry is an impressive meld of science, art and design. Inspired by Anthony Caro's notion of Sculpitecture a hybrid form developed from the union of sculpture and architecture, the girls, all Year 11 students, explored the visual connections between the two disciplines in their entry Hybrid.

Accessing images on the Internet, in books and journals and on the School's intranet image base, they looked at work by the likes of Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. Other students from Years 10 and 12 then developed the project by using multiple sources such as Alexander Calder, Dai Rees and Bridget Riley.

All of the projects were developed with individual approaches and sketches were produced to explore their ideas for final pieces. The final Hybrid works of art were hung at different heights around the School and staff, pupils and visitors were invited to comment on their responses to the work.

Art teacher Steve Imms credits the project with being a real inspiration for the girls, inspiring them to take an interest in both art and architecture.
