Ashura

The Shi'a world is in mourning after bomb attacks shattered the peace of Ashura commemorations in Iraq and Pakistan. The holy city of Karbala suffered seven bomb blasts and more than 75 are dead and hundreds injured.

There were more than two million pilgrims in the holy city for the anniversary of the death of the Imam Husayn. Determined to not let terror rule the day, Ashura rituals continued but the mood was sombre and angry.

In London more than 5,000 people turned out for the annual Ashura march from Marble Arch to Holland Park. Many had only just learned of the attacks on the Shi'a in Iraq and Pakistan.
