12 Muharram: Karbala

Iraq endured the second of three days of national mourning for the victims of Tuesday’s terrorist attacks.

The mood in Karbala was calmer following the mass funerals of yesterday.

In Baghdad, in a show of unity, Sunni and Shi’a clerics took to the streets vowing the violence would not trigger a civil war.

The Shi'a faithful continued to practice rituals relating to commemorating the death of the Imam Husayn including self-flagellation, chest beating and chanting outside his Shrine in Karbala.

Iranian pilgrims, who made up half of the casualties in Karbala, started going home, the injured being evacuated for treatment.

Karbala: two days on
The mood in Karbala was calmer today compared to the angry, grief-stricken crowds of yesterday when tens of thousands gathered to bury the victims of the Ashura terrorist attacks.
