The Human Canvas

Alison Newstead

I don’t see how it's possible to live thinking 'what if', 'I wish I’d done that'. If you're going to go through your life thinking 'can't do this, I might hurt myself or I can't do that, it might be a bit dangerous' then you're not really going to live fully are you?
Alison Newstead

Performance artist Alice Newstead has always been interested in "using the body in my own artwork". She is particularly drawn to body art as she believes everyone can relate to it as we all have one. For her, acts like breaking the skin will always produce a visceral reaction on anyone who sees it.

She performs as part of a troupe calling themselves Constant Elevation. They have produced a series of suspension artworks called the Housewife Suspensions with French artist Benoit. These are predominantly private events, often in front of a small group of friends who are typically involved in the performance preparation and recording. Photographs are taken to document the performances and to be shared – but not bought or sold - amongst a community in the Internet.

Hanging from hooks from the ceiling whilst first knitting, ironing and, for the final one, having a quintessential English tea party complete with scones, jam and cucumber sandwiches… The tea party was done using surprisingly ancient techniques but Alison is more interested in humour than spirituality.
