Dessislava Stefanova grew up singing the songs of her native Bulgaria. As a child, she joined the Zagorche Academy of Folk Music and Dance, learning the vital rhythms and dynamic theatrical presentation of ancient folk melodies and stories, which the troupe performed to audiences all over Europe.

At 18, Dessi was signed up as a professional singer with the renowned Philip Koutev Bulgarian National Folk Ensemble. Since 2000 she has been working in the UK as a professional musician and teacher, performing, recording film soundtracks and delivering workshops.

She is founder and leader of the London Bulgarian Choir, which will be competing in the category finals of The BBC Choir of the Year competition on 12th November 2006 in Cardiff.
