Smithills School Senior Brass Band and Musical Director Chris Wormald are 2006 National Youth Brass Band Champions of Great Britain (School Section). The band has won its section at the National Youth Brass Band Championships of Great Britain for the past three years and taken the top award at the National Festival of Music For Youth (School Section) seven times in the last eight years including five consecutive years from 2001 to 2005; a remarkable achievement given that Smithills is but a multi-racial comprehensive school from Bolton.

The Senior Brass Band has won a major, national or international title every year consecutively from 1994 to the present day. In 2005 the band not only retained its National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain title but also won its third consecutive Gold Medal and First Prize in July at the World Music Contest in Holland, won the National Festival of Music For Youth for the fifth consecutive year just days later and made a sixth appearance at the Royal Albert Hall in London before winning the Tameside Youth Festival of Brass for the third year in a row.

Since 1996 the band has performed in Norway, New Zealand, Japan, France, Holland, the USA, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and in many parts of the World. In July 2007 it will undertake its third major concert tour of America in seven years.

Smithills School Senior Brass Band performs Sousa's The Globe and The Eagle in How Music Works.
