Wesker shot to prominence in the early 1960s as one of the Angry Young Men. By the age of 30, he had rocked the literary establishment with hard-hitting plays about ordinary people, including The Kitchen, Chicken Soup with Barley, Roots and Chips with Everything. Since then he has kept up a flow of plays, often tackling controversial subjects head on. The Journalists sparked a seven-year legal battle when a Royal Shakespeare Company cast refused to perform it. His recent play, Denial, centred on allegations of child abuse.
Wesker's plays are performed worldwide to huge critical acclaim, though he has never hit the commercial jackpot. He's rumoured to have hit other things though – never one to duck an argument, tales of his temper are legendary.
