One-time rebel musician, Geldof is now famous for his charity and campaigning work about Third World debt. 'Saint Bob' to some, he remains outspoken and controversial.
Born and brought up in Ireland, Geldof formed the Boomtown Rats in the mid-1970s. The rock-meets-punk act had a worldwide hit with I Don't Like Mondays, based on a teen shooting in America. Unsurprisingly, it caused a row in the USA. A series of other hits followed, and marriage to TV presenter, the late Paula Yates.
In 1985, Geldof organised the Live Aid concert in aid of famine relief in Ethiopia. The first event of its kind in the UK, it set a trend that has continued to grow. Since then he has campaigned tenaciously for debt relief, as well as being a musician and a high-profile dad.
