Introduction » |
Cloud Atlas is a dazzling construction of six different stories, set in the past, present and future, and told in disparate styles. Each story is split and the parts layered together, connecting such diverse characters as a 19th-century American notary, a 1970s nuclear scientist and a cloned waitress from the future. The complexity is no mere tricksiness, though – Mitchell is concerned with human ambition, injustice and responsibility, and Cloud Atlas packs both emotional and moral punch. The novel was shortlisted for last year's Booker Prize, and many were surprised it didn't win. |
