Ep 1: Boy with the flagVanley Burke is regarded as one of the finest anthropological photographers working in Britain today. This documentary follows his monologue as he discusses his community, the camera panning through Handsworth's markets, social clubs, mosques, churches and parks. He explains his upbringing in England and why his community is still providing original and invigorating material for him.
Ep 2: Mrs Lancaster
Exploring the older generation of Handsworth, focusing on 90 year old Esme Lancaster. She explains her transition into English society. Emigrating from Jamaica to Britain in 1950 amid racial tension she began teaching in local schools.
As well as working as a social worker, she adopted 41 children. In August 2000 Esme was awarded an MBE for her work in the community and for her pivotal role in the Young Mother's Relief Association set up in 1985.
Ep 3: People for change
The issues of gang culture and violent crime are discussed by local activists, poets and artists who hope to steer their young people away from these problems. Read more on gun crime >
This episode focuses on the future generations of Handsworth. Sequences of adolescents socialising at their local youth club are accompanied by their views on their life in Handsworth and their hopes for the future. It explores the issues and problems they face as young adults growing up in modern day Britain.
