About FourDocs

FourDocs is the online documentary channel from Channel 4.

Anyone with a story to tell, an opinion to voice or a home made documentary can send their film link to FourDocs.

Films should be 3 minutes and comply with our legal standards.

Why did Channel 4 set up FourDocs?

Kate Vogel of 3MW says this. "Fourdocs is the first step on the ladder for new directing talent at Channel 4. It's a space where people can share their mini masterpieces with an engaged audience of fellow filmmakers, and get honest feedback from industry titans. It's the only site that selects online films and puts them directly in a primetime terrestrial broadcast slot (you get £1,500 as a license fee by the way). Some might say we're nuts to give all of this for free, but actually we just really care about getting the best and brightest directors working with us"

Renowned documentary maker and exec Producer of FourDocs, Patrick Uden, says "Our newly revitalised FourDocs is now even more welcoming and enjoyable, but our documentary criticism remains is as tough and sharp as ever. We know that nothing helps the aspiring or semi-professional filmmaker more than truthful insight and advice. So our tough documentary criticism from experienced filmmakers remains one of the unique and admired features of FourDocs. It is a great opportunity to get professional feedback, so use it"

What happens after I send my film link?

We will look at all the links sent into us, and some of the films will be reviewed by our editors in the blog, and linked to. If the commissioner at Channel 4 thinks your film is really great, we'll ask you to FTP your film over, so we can transfer it into our new Brightcove video player to stream on the site.

How can I get my film on Channel 4?

Each month, a selection of docs are seen by commissioning editors at Channel 4. If they like your film, (and especially if it links to something topical), it may get screened on Channel 4 or More 4 on an ad-hoc basis. Or, it may help you land a a commission for future film work with the channel.

Alternatively you should make a film for the regular FourDocs / 3 Minute Wonder themes we run. Every few months we pick the best 4 to play over a week at 7.55pm on Channel 4.
