Diana stands amidst photographers

The debate programme 11.05pm

C4 Wed 6 June 2007
Channel 4 follows tonight's screening of its documentary, Diana: The Witnesses in the Tunnel, with a 30-minute studio debate exploring the issues raised in the run-up to the film's transmission. It is presented by Channel 4 News anchor, Krishnan Guru-Murthy.

The studio debate, produced by LWT from The London Studios, examines the decision to include in the film photographs taken at the scene in the aftermath of the crash. It also debates the case the film makes to exonerate the paparazzi of causing the crash and the ongoing interest in Diana ten years after her death.

Speakers confirmed as taking part in the debate include: Hamish Mykura, Channel 4's Commissioning Editor for History, Science and Religion; media commentator, Professor Roy Greenslade; Martyn Gregory, author of Diana: The Last Days; Dickie Arbiter, a former press secretary to HM The Queen; the Evening Standard's royal correspondent, Richard Jobson; and journalist Joan Smith.

In addition to airing the debate, Channel 4 is also inviting viewers to take part in a web forum in which they will have an opportunity to exchange views with Mykura and the film's executive producer, Philip Armstrong-Dampier.

Chief Executive, Andy Duncan, said: "I'd like once again to express our regret that the inclusion of certain still images in the documentary has caused distress to Princes William and Harry. This decision has been debated at Channel 4 over several months and we have also carefully weighed the arguments that the Princes have made for the removal of the photographs.

"Having given the matter a great deal of thought, we believe that it is in the public interest for the documentary to be shown unedited. We believe the inclusion of the photographs is justified for the evidence they offer in support of the photographers' accounts of the events surrounding the crash. The photographs have been selected with due consideration for the feelings of the relatives of those involved – there are no images of any of the victims in the aftermath of the crash. What is shown goes no further than what has already been featured elsewhere in the British media.

"Despite the precautions we have taken, we recognise the film is likely to provoke a strong reaction from viewers and that is why we have commissioned a special on-air debate to reflect the views that have been expressed for and against the documentary's transmission. We are giving our viewers an opportunity to exchange views with Channel 4's commissioning team and the production team at ITN through a special web forum both before and after the documentary has been screened."
