1. Wild foxes often only live for two years, although can survive for up to nine years
2. Foxes thrive because they are omnivores and will eat almost anything – hence they are welcomed on many urban allotments (without chickens!) as a means of controlling rats and slugs
3. They don't hibernate and are nocturnal animals
4. Male foxes are about 112cm (44") long including tail. Females are a little shorter
5. They mate once a year from December to February
6. The young male foxes leave home territory in October/November to set up their own territory
7. About 50% of foxes die within one year and 80% before they reach three
8. The migration from rural areas to urban ones seems to date back to the end of World War 1 and the gradual industrialisation of farming
9. Local councils in London gave up trying to control foxes back in the 1970s
10. The most lethal method of fox control is cars, with many foxes killed by cars each year – often in October and November when young males are on the move.
