MEET THE AU PAIRS
Advice when appointing au pairsWhen looking for an au pair, BAPAA (British Au Pair Agencies Association) advises the following check-points when appointing through an agency:
1. All au pairs must have been interviewed and reference checked and properly informed by the agency. This means that the au pairs know what their duties and responsibilities are likely to be and what to expect from the host family in return for their help.
2. Au pairs must have been police checked and be able to produce a medical certificate.
3. Check that the au pair is legally entitled to au pair in the UK – eg that he or she is a European Union national or from a country that has been legally approved by the UK government to au pair in the UK.
Does the agency offer the following?
- free advice and support during the placement for both the host family and the au pair
- a programme of activities for the au pair including au pair outings and meetings
- a welcome pack on arrival for the au pair including contact numbers for other local au pairs so they can make friends
- guidance for families on how to welcome and settle in their au pair
- guidance for au pairs on how to make the most of the au pair experience
