THE ANIMAL AU PAIR

First on Channel 4 June 2007

Jackie Rowberry seems to be demanding the impossible – an au pair that is both brilliant with children and animals. She is an animal trainer and a mum, who runs her business from home in Berkshire supplying animals for the film and TV world. She can train anything from turkeys to reindeer. But with goats, ponies, dogs, cats, birds, chickens, a wallaby and a toddler to look after – she desperately needs a new au pair.

She has had a long line of hopeless girls before – many refuse to shift the endless piles of manure, others struggle with the demands of child care. And one had to go after she had cooked and burnt 24 fish fingers for four year old Josh's lunch – because that his how many he requested. So will 25-year-old Michelle Palmer from Zimbabwe fair any better? She has come over to the UK to start a new life. Her mother has died and there is nothing keeping her in Africa. Jackie is impressed after her brief interview. Michelle has grown up with animals – albeit elephants, lions and zebras, she can ride horses and she swears adamantly that she does not smoke. Even little Josh takes to her straightaway. But, is this all too good to be true? How will mother and au pair really get on once the honeymoon period is finally over…
