The Pregnant Man
About the programme
Using newly shot footage, and with remarkable exclusive access to Thomas and his wife Nancy, who have just announced that they are expecting a second baby, Cutting Edge follows the landmark pregnancy from conception to birth. When the story broke, it was revealed that Thomas had actually grown up as a girl, Tracy La Gondino, in Hawaii.
He was perceived by others as a tomboy growing up, and after the death of his mother and the onset of puberty he discovered his true gender identity. Tracy later underwent gender re-assignment surgery and hormone treatments to legally, biologically and socially re-assign as a man, Thomas, although stopping short of having a hysterectomy.
Thomas married Nancy and they settled in the sleepy cowboy town of Bend, Oregon and planned to start a family: just like any other couple. But with his wife unable to have children, Thomas took the unprecedented decision to stop his testosterone treatment and get pregnant himself by donor insemination.
When Thomas and Nancy told the world their good news, they were thrust into the media spotlight, but also faced an outpouring of hatred and abuse, including death threats and people praying for a miscarriage. As well as telling the gripping human tale behind the headlines, the film looks at what it's like to be at the centre of a worldwide media whirlwind, and explores the nature of gender, identity and prejudice, and the desire to be accepted as normal.
