What do you get if you place your VCR into a crazy
time machine thing*? Tomorrow's television today is
'literally' what which co-incidentally is also
what British Web Broadcasting www.bwebb.tv
is all about. Creative director Charlie Dancey describes
what is on offer from this new venture by techno whiz-kid
Jonathan Cole and actor/TV presenter Robert Llewellyn
(Red Dwarf, Scrapheap Challenge).
So what's on this Internet TV comedy malarkey of
yours then?
With BWebB, Robert supplied his own comedy content as
well as inviting his chums from the comedy circuit to
come and play people like Hattie Hayridge, Nigel
Planer and Phil Cornwell.
We immediately set about shooting a few internet 'mini-series'.
Robert and Nigel did one called 'Let's Really Talk About
Our Problems', where Robert plays Jerry, a money-grabbing
dot com type, while Nigel plays his psychologically
dysfunctional brother, Tom, who is obsessed with therapy
and counselling.
Phil Cornwell teamed up with Rick Stone to make a series
of ad-libbed head-to-heads called 'Billy and Dave'
and there's loads more.
How is web content different from TV I simply
must know?
Well, right now it needs to be fairly short. Web viewers
have a very limited attention span they'll hit
the back button on their browser faster than a hyperactive
kid can hop channels with a TV remote. We keep our stuff
short and sweet more like a cartoon strip than
a TV programme.
All our content is delivered by the QuickTime
because it gives the best picture and allows us to do
some very clever stuff that you can't do in Real Player
or Windows Media Player. We're aware that it's not the
most prominent format and that it's a fairly large (albeit
free) download but serious movie watchers are
not going to baulk at an 8MB download when a four minute
comedy clip will be about 11MB at broadband quality.
As CEO of Enron I have to ask how can I
afford to watch?
Well, we've just launched our pay movie service
viewers buy 'movie minutes' and spend them on downloading
content. Content providers get a percentage of all revenue
generated by their material. You can buy movie minutes
online using a credit card and shortly by doing
a clever SMS trick with your phone. You can watch a
typical BWebB comedy clip for about the cost of sending
a text message. As video compression technology improves
and streaming costs reduce so will the cost of a movie
minute.
You've got 30 seconds left to plug BWebB to death
AND include the words 'Salami' and 'Ferrari'
If you are planning to make web movies go with
us. We'll handle all the technical stuff and we can
deliver your content either from your site or from ours.
You can then concentrate on what you are good at (making
funny movies) and we'll provide a broadcasting engine,
which is what we're good at. You'll typically receive
about 1p for every minute of your stuff that somebody
watches all you have to do is to get hugely popular
and the 'Salami Effect' will kick in and turn their
laughter into your Ferrari.
Smart arse.
