Holi
On the full moon, Hindus celebrate Holi, one of the most ancient Indian festivals. There are lots of legends associated with Holi. One is about a king who, with the help of his wicked sister Holika, tried to kill his son Prahlada. Holika, who was said to be immune to burning, sat with the prince in a huge fire. The boy lived but his aunt was burnt to death. Holika’s name lives on in the name of this festival.
Holi is also a celebration of Lord Krishna, who survived an attempt by the she-demon, Putana, to kill him. At this time, people shed their inhibitions. They light huge bonfires, burn effigies of Holika and throw coloured powder and water over each other, sing and dance in the streets and have a wonderful time.
