The Qur’an

Girls in Afghanistan
Afghan girls read the Qur’an at a mosque in Kabul during the fast of Ramadan. Under the rule of the Taliban, who imposed an extremely narrow, patriarchal version of Islam on Afghanistan, women and girls had to be covered from head to toe, including their faces, and their lives were severely and often violently restricted. Today, although women have more freedom and their rights are enshrined in the constitution, even those with influence still operate in an atmosphere of fear and intimidation.
