The Qur’an

Swearing allegiance
An Iraqi boy stands next to his newly released father as he swears his allegiance to Iraq on the Qur’an. With him are 20 other former prisoners at a US-Iraqi military centre in Baghdad's al-Adhamiyah district.
Just over half of Iraqi Muslims are Shi’a, and most of the remainder are Sunni. The population also includes Christians, Zoroastrians, Bahai, and small communities of other religions, including Jews, who have an unbroken history in the region since Babylonian times.
