Muslim pilgrims reach out to touch the door of the Kaaba inside Mecca's Grand Mosque, Islam's holiest shrine. According to the Five Pillars of Islam, it is the duty of all Muslims to go on the Hajj – pilgrimage to Mecca – at least once during their lifetime. All practising Muslims, everywhere in the world, turn towards the Kaaba when they pray. Very few are allowed inside the Kaaba, but because it is considered to be the centre of the Muslim world, those who do so may face any direction to say their prayers.
