The Seven Wonders of the Muslim World

Spain
More than 1,000 pillars of granite, onyx, marble and jasper support the arches of the Mezquita in Cordoba, southern Spain. The Moors conquered Cordoba in 711 and under their rule the city became a centre of art, architecture, philosophy and poetry. During this period, Muslims, Christians and Jews coexisted creatively here but in 1236 Ferdinand and Isabella seized Cordoba and from 1482 the Inquisition maintained a tribunal in the Alcázar (castle) for three centuries. The Mezquita remained standing but an incongruous Baroque cathedral was built in the middle of it.
