Indonesian men praying in March 2008, on the birthday of the prophet Muhammed. There are no religious services associated with this day, but many Muslims use it as a time to express their love and devotion for the prophet. Although Muhammed’s birthday is widely celebrated across the Muslim world, some branches of Islam, such as the Wahabi in Saudi Arabia, ban such festivities, saying that they are contrary to Islam.
