Singer Fadimata Walet and dancer Moussa Ag Mohamed of the Tartit troup, are Tuareg musicians from Mali, in West Africa. The Tuaregs are the nomadic inhabitants of the southern Sahara desert – descendents of the Berbers who inhabited North Africa before the advent of the Arabs and the black sub-Saharan Africans. Most Tuaregs are Muslims but their ways of relating to God and religion are closely tied to their lives in the desert. Over the last 100 years their centuries old nomadic customs have come under pressure in different states and from colonial rulers.
