Lung cancer develops from cells within the lungs (the organs responsible for breathing), the bronchi (air passages leading to the wind pipe) or the trachea (wind pipe). Smoking can also cause chronic lung diseases like bronchitis and emphysema. Emphysema is a progressive lung condition which leaves sufferers struggling for breath.
Lung cancer is the second most common form of cancer in the UK after breast cancer. Smoking and passive smoking cause nine out of ten lung cancers. There are over 38,300 new cases of lung cancer in the UK each year. Exposure to tobacco smoke is by far the most important risk factor for lung cancer. The longer you smoke the greater your risk. Stopping smoking dramatically reduces your risk of lung cancer and other diseases.
Emphysema is caused by gradual damage to the structure of the lungs, which makes it harder to exhale. It is a struggle for sufferers to force air in and out. This eventually means that the body is not getting enough oxygen, leading to fatigue and weight loss. Although it can start simply as mild breathlessness during exercise and a persistent cough, it can leave sufferers housebound and reliant on oxygen supplies, and eventually contribute to death. Cigarette smoking causes 80% of emphysema.

Sophie King
Sophie, who first learnt of the competition through her drama teacher, had helped make another short film/TV show called Young Shakespeare for the BBC when she was 13.
Sophie said: “This has been a great experience. Coming up with an idea about smoking, something that was pretty gross and would stick in the head of other teenagers, and then going to London to develop it into a film was amazing. I loved the chance to be an extra in my own film too. Now that I’ve done this work behind the camera, I’d love to go on and do a lot more acting.”
