The Winners

THE 2006 BRITISH BOOK AWARDS WINNERS in 12 categories were announced at a reception held in the headquarters of Channel 4.

The winners were as follows:

Richard & Judy Best Read of the Year
Ten titles, each a good read, but only one was named Richard & Judy Best Read of the Year
Winner: Labyrinth by Kate Mosse (Orion)


WH Smith Book of the Year
Six bestsellers that have brought people flocking into bookshops and libraries
Winner: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J K Rowling (Bloomsbury)

Reader's Digest Author of the Year
Four authors who have made a big impact with their writing and the sales of their books
Winner: Alan Bennett (Faber and Faber / Profile Books)

Red House Children's Book of the Year
Six books to excite younger readers
Winner: Ark Angel by Anthony Horowitz (Walker Books)

worldbooks Crime Thriller of the Year
The line-up under investigation for a sensational catalogue of crime
Winner: The Take by Martina Cole (Headline)

Sainsbury's Popular Fiction Award
Four books that have been hugely succesful in all types of bookselling outlets across the country
Winner: The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger (Vintage)

Waterstone's Newcomer of the Year
Four writers who have attracted attention with their first novels
Winner: Marina Lewycka – A Short History of Tractors in Ukranian (Viking)

Tesco Sports Book of the Year
The bold and the brave tell of the agony and ecstacy of their sporting lives
Winner: Being Freddie by Andrew Flintoff (Hodder)

decibel Writer of the Year
In its second year, the decibel award goes to the writer of African, Caribbean or Asian origin who has made the greatest contribution to the literary year
Winner: Diana Evans – 26a (Chatto & Windus)

Amazon Biography of the Year
A national treasure, a mother/daughter relationship, a long-suffering wife and a homeless man vie for the honours
Sharon Osbourne Extreme: My Autobiography by Sharon Osbourne (Time Warner)

Borders / Books etc History Book of the Year
A broad choice of historical themes – from East to West, ancient to modern
Auschwitz by Laurence Rees (BBC Books)

Play.com TV & Film Book of the Year
Investigating the coastline, a roaming chef, conspiracy in Africa and a classic fantasy
The Constant Gardener by John Le Carre (Hodder)
