The Big Art Project

Timeline/
process

Oct 05 The Channel 4 Big Art Project launch
The Big Art Project launched to the public in October 2005 when we invited suggestions for sites. Individuals, communities and other groups filled in our online or hard copy entry form to nominate a site for public art.
Dec 05 The next round
Sites which made it to the next round were informed. Nominators were contacted by Big Art Project researchers and asked to provide more information about their site.
Jan 06 Final shortlist of sites decided
The shortlist of 12 sites was drafted and the selection team visited the sites to help choose the finalist seven.
Apr 06 – Apr 07 Final sites announced
The sites are announced. The process of appointing curators to help guide and support each site begins. Working closely with local communities, curators in turn begin to approach world-class artists, inviting them to put forward proposals for these specific sites. Those who nominated the sites visit art and artists to see what's possible. The curator dedicated to each site introduces their site group to many types of art in different areas of the UK and abroad.
Communities work with their curator to develop their knowledge of Public Art. Nominators experience 'Art Encounters' to help them make informed decisions about the artist they would like to work on their site.
Mar – May 07 Chosen artists to be announced
Each site produces a shortlist of artists to be considered, with a view to submitting proposals.
Oct 06 – July 07 Fundraising Phase
The Big Art Team sets about generating the sponsorship required to realise the art on all sites.
Spring 07 Art Commissioning begins
Chosen artists are confirmed, detailed artwork proposals begin to be developed. Big Art communities decide on the artwork they want to see developed their local site. Some sites may also see additional commissions to complement to main Big Art scheme.
Autumn – Winter 08 Series broadcast
The series documenting the last two years of the project transmits on Channel 4.
