Spencer Tunick: Melbourne 3

| Back | Next | |
Spencer Tunick's tableaux are carefully composed events using volunteers. The group metamorphoses into a 'liquid' mass, covering and echoing the contours of the terrain, as in this example, Melbourne 3, photographed in 2002. Although he has been arrested five times in the USA on various public indecency charges, the work does not intend to titillate. Nudity is not new in art and, in this case, being naked in urban settings highlights the contrast of the natural human body and the environments we create to live in. Tunick states, 'I feel that my nudes are not controversial. The controversy lies in the fact that I am using the city as my landscape.' (© Spencer Tunick / courtesy of 1-20 Gallery, New York) |
