Robert Smithson: Spiral Jetty

| Back | ||
Robert Smithson's monumental earthwork, Spiral Jetty (1970,) on the Great Salt Lake in Utah has become a signature piece of early land art. Using black basalt rocks and mud from the site, the artist created a spiral 450 metres (500 yards) long and 4.5 metres (5 yards) wide that stretches out anti-clockwise into the translucent red water. Although remote and often submerged under the rising and falling levels of the lake, the work still attracts thousands of visitors every year (© Estate of Robert Smithson/licensed by VAGA New York NY.
