The fouth plinth in Trafalgar Square has stood empty since money ran out on the original development. London's ongoing 4th Plinth Project provides a public platform for artists that are often only seen by a contemporary art gallery audience. Artist Marc Quinn says of his work Alison Lapper Pregnant (unveiled September 2005), 'Most public sculpture, especially in the Trafalgar Square and Whitehall areas, is triumphant male statuary... Alison's statue could represent a new model of female heroism. In the past, heroes like Nelson conquered the outside world. Now it seems to me they conquer their own circumstances and the prejudices of others and I believe that Alison's portrait will symbolise this (photo: Sparkpics)
