Michelangelo: Pieta

| Back | Next | |
Michelangelo's marble Pieta (1498-99) depicts the body of Christ held by Mary after the crucifixion. It was moved to its current location in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome in the 18th century. Highly finished compared to Michelangelo's other works, it nevertheless looks a little out of proportion in its current position. This may be because its original installation was higher up and the artist corrected the perspective to account for the spectator's relative viewpoint (photo: Scala, Florence) |
