How to become the next Big 4 artist

Channel 4’s Big 4 has become something of a London landmark since it was erected in 2007, so it’s great news that planning permission has been secured for another five years. As with the last iteration by Stephanie Imbeau, the fifth skinning of the Big 4 is being awarded to an artist through a competition.

THE BIG 4 COMPETITION FOR ART AND DESIGN STUDENTS AND RECENT GRADUATES

THE COMPETITION IS NOW CLOSED. The winner will be announced shortly on this site. (If you missed it this time, don’t despair – there will be a sixth iteration and it is planned to be run as a competition.)

Channel 4 is looking for a fun, playful design to inspire and entertain passers-by, visitors and C4 staff.

Designs had to work with the pre-existing 50-foot high metal structure in front of the Channel 4 building on Horseferry Road, be weatherproof and hardwearing, and be able to be lit (from the outside or the inside) to make a statement after dark. The winning design will have been conceived as a 3D experience rather than a 2D design.

To give you some ideas, we pointed them in the direction of what has been done before by other artists.

Who could enter?

The competition was open to current art or design students, and those who graduated from a BA, MA or other post-graduate fine art or design course at a UK art school or university in 2008 or 2009. They had to be currently resident in the UK.

Each eligible entrant could make one application only which included a 300 word synopsis (with a one line 'elevator pitch' capturing the essence of their proposal) and up to 4 images (drawings or photographs of models/maquettes etc.)

The winner

3 designs are being shortlisted by a panel of judges from Channel4 and the art and design world. The shortlisted designs will undergo a feasibility study before the winning design is chosen.

Terms and Conditions

  • The competition is open to current students of Fine Art or Design at degree level or equivalent, or graduates in these courses from 2008 or 2009. Entrants must be resident in the UK.
  • Entries must be submitted on the supplied web form.
  • 3 entrants will be shortlisted by the judging panel, who are looking for a fresh, original and fun design. Shortlisted designs will undergo a feasibility study to investigate cost, durability and health and safety standards of the design. From this shortlist one winner will be selected. The winning design will be chosen based on the outcome of the feasibility study combined with the original criteria.
  • Competition closes at midnight Friday 26th March 2010
  • Shortlisted entrants shall be contacted by email by the amended time of 5pm Friday 16th April 2010.
  • Shortlisted entrants will be notified of the winning design by the new date of Friday 21st May following the feasibility study. The winner must respond by Friday 4th June and be available for the remainder of June for a reasonable level of discussion by phone or in meetings to discuss the construction of the design.
  • By entering this competition you agree that you have read and accept Competition Terms and Conditions and Channel 4 Privacy Policy.
